Choosing for a child comes down to three things: their body weight, their height, and whether they can move the blanket on their own. Here’s how to get all three right.
Start with body weight
Body weight sets the weight of the blanket. Height decides the size that fits them best.

Under 40 lb? Wait. A weighted blanket isn’t suitable for a child below this weight, regardless of how old they are.
Between the two? Choose the lighter option. Deep Touch Pressure works well at a lighter weight, and too heavy is the most common reason a child won’t settle under it.
Then check height
The blanket should cover your child from shoulders to feet, without a lot of excess hanging over the edge of the bed. Excess fabric pulls weight off their body and onto the floor, which makes the blanket feel lighter than intended and shifts through the night.

- 40″×60″ suits children roughly 4′0″ to 5′0″ (60″) tall
If weight and height point to different sizes, follow body weight. A blanket that’s slightly short is comfortable; a blanket that’s too heavy isn’t. Kids naturally shift toward the head of the bed anyway, so a little less length at the feet goes unnoticed.
Can your child move it off on their own? This is the one non-negotiable check. Before your child sleeps under the blanket, watch them push it off unassisted while lying down. If they can’t, the blanket is too heavy for them right now — size down or wait until they can do so easily. This matters more than any number in the table.
Not suitable for babies or toddlers. Weighted blankets should never be used with infants or toddlers, or with any child who can’t reposition and remove the blanket independently.
Sensitive, sensory-seeking, or new to weight?
